| The reason the UK's relationship with the EU was in a form of limbo was because the Labour Party broke its manifesto commitment to hold a referendum before signing up to the Lisbon Treaty. Had they done so, and achieved a "Yes" result, then there would have been no need for the 2016 referendum. A "No" vote would have required the EU and the UK to negotiate a better-balanced relationship. Instead, those who were frustrated with the way the EU was going felt that they had a once-in-a-generation chance to change direction in 2016, and duly voted to leave. You just can't trust Labour promises; the unintended consequences when they break them can be disastrous. |
