| There is no need for these calls on the 999 system to be drawn out.If anybody else makes a 999 call all you need to tell the call handler is who you are.Where you are.And what is happening.Everything else they want to know can be dealt with later.If you get the basic information,you can get the call running.I used to answer these 999 calls when I was on Light duties at Scotland Yard.A 999 call should be assigned to police units within about 10 seconds of the call taker receiving the call.After the call has been assigned,you can then take your time asking questions etc.I took calls to burglaries where the burglar was arrested while I was still on the phone to the person reporting it.Call handlers that don't get the call running first need retraining.The problem now though is you assign the call.But quite often there just is no unit to take the call |
