David.Thieves will get something like a short scaffolding pole and force the D lock.If it's an expensive or very desirable bike then they may spray the lock with liquid nitrogen to shatter the lock.As you say.Be careful where you leave your bike.An ideal resolution to the attempted theft of your bike would be to wire it up to the mains.I think 230 volts would be an ideal deterrent
