@David Giles Worth commenting that Cromwell was not a Republican; indeed he was "king in all but name" having participated in a coronation complete but for the placing of a crown on his head. Note also the arrangements on his death in 1658: just as if he were the King. During the Protectorate he created Barons and awarded Knighthoods (something you might not expect a Republican to do) and was granted by Parliament the right to name his heir. Cromwell's attitude to established religions needs to be seen in the context of the period, and its political demands. Factions were competing for recognition (rather like today's 50% taxes and taxes on "Mansions") and expressing views that they may not have held with great conviction! While I doubt he would have approved of High Church he may well have enjoyed (at least in prospect) his daughter’s bells. |
