"I'm sure someone else can explain?!" Yes, she's really Bittern, but painted Garter Blue and dolled up as Dominion of New Zealand (the original was taken out of service and broken up in the mid-1960s). There's something of a fashion for doing things a bit differently in mainline steam at the moment, see also 'Britannia' in the black livery she only had for a short while, and Flying Scotsman's currently painted black as well. They've also re-streamlined Duchess of Sutherland, which was quite controversial at the time. http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2200500 This upsurge in experimentation is possibly a halo effect from the completion of Tornado a couple of years ago. The next Chiswick steam is actually Britannia coming through eastbound on Thursday morning, but also returning west via South Acton and Brentford rather than on the main line through Chiswick. http://www.uksteam.info/tours/t11/t0728a.htm I make that Chiswick station at around 10:50 and South Acton around 20:10. |
