All this takes me back to when I was 10 years old, we lived in Godalming and the only trains were the boring green Southern electrics. A trip to stand on Woking platforms and watch real trains thundering through was a highlight of the holidays, and the Battle of Britain class locos pulling expresses from Waterloo even more so. Even then I complained that they weren’t REAL streamliners, and wanted to go to watch Mallard and similar beauties on the LNER. Never allowed, although much later I was pulled by Mallard from Doncaster to Kings X, when Mallard was nearing the end of her working life. Ah, the diversions of youth. |
