"I am surprised that Michael does not see that serious "social problems" are already with us." Care to explain? There's been a rise in property crime, as you'd expect given rising unemployment, but not as much as might have been expected - the murder rate, on the other hand, is still falling, so social breakdown is not manifesting itself in serious widespread law and order problems. I'm not aware of increased social unrest (riots, marches etc.) due to increased unemployment, which could be due to a few factors; the systematic destruction of the concept of organisation in favour of atomised consumer units (a key Thatcherite tenet, precisely to enable to ruling class to get away with robbery without the country being brought to a halt), the fact that unemployment isn't as bad as it could have been, migratory labour (people going back to Poland when the jobs run out) not to mention people being more law-abiding in general these days and the police being very tough. So, if you were expecting riots on the streets, I'm not sure that's happened yet, which doesn't mean it mightn't happen in the future, but I can't see what the catalyst would be given the structure of British society now. A Facebook campaign, perhaps. |
