___The documents show that officials from the Tory-controlled council planned a radical overhaul of the council’s housing policy, overturning the right to a home for life _____ I fail to see the problem. If someone is in need of housing then it should be supplied, and if they can't afford the market rent because of circumstances, then they should receive a subsidy or free rent. If on the other hand, ten years down the line the children have left home and they are earning good money, then why on earth should the tax payer be providing subsidised housing when there are others in more need? I think there is strong case to say that all publicly funded housing will be on a five year tenancy basis then it will be reviewed. Does the middle aged couple still need a three bed flat at a subsidised rent when the children have left home and got flats of their own? Does the person who has now qualified for the right to live and work here still need the same help as he did when he arrived here penniless? |
