Thanks to Justine Fox for reproducing that article. It is a timely reminder about the true nature of the modern Conservative Party. Although not mentioned in the article, arguably one of the biggest examples of gerrymandering was that conducted by the Tory council in Wandsworth in the 1980s. This involved moving working class tenants out of the tower blocks in Battersea and replacing them with more middle class residents. The result was the loss of the hitherto safe Labour seat of Battersea in the 1987 general election. (This despite there being a nationwide swing against the Tories). |
