Maggie, I had similar issues when phoning round insurance companies for quotes...they just didn't get the joint freehold issue (it's not the fact it's a maisonette, it would be the same with two or more conversion flats in a house) and i was filled with misinformation by the end of it, until i called Hiscox. It would be a bit complicated if you and your co-freeholder had separate buildings insurance (i.e. which insurer pays the claim, perhaps you are in fact "over-insured" because of doubling up) because buildings insurance can't be split between different floors of what is essentially one property. With one, jointly named policy, split 50:50 it is unambiguous. Good luck sorting it, and please report back on how competitive Zurich are (I need to renew mine in a couple of months!). |
