Doesn't the haste involved in all of this, the lack of serious debate or clarity, the absence of direct popular approval concern anyone just one teensy little bit?
This issue isn't about Tory or Labour, Christian Democrat or Socialist, Union pour un Mouvement Populaire or Front National.
It's about national governments in 27 countries giving away national sovereignty that isn't theirs to give. It's about these same leaders smearing national sentiment as “populist demagoguery and using the Holocaust as justification for "the supranational idea".
It's about "a new form of democracy" less democratic than the one it's replacing.
It's about elected leaders being less than honest with the people who elected them, not calling things what they actually are. It's about the author of the rejected Constitution saying "public opinion will be led to adopt, without knowing it, the proposals that we dare not present to them ‘directly’.”
It's about the spirit of Article 21 of Germany's Basic Law being broken, an executive representing "the political will of the people" yet being too scared to actually ask the people their opinion.
It's about 84% of Germany's law already being handed down by the EU. It's about the British government refusing to divulge how much of the UK's law comes from the EU.
It's about EU corpus juris being bolted onto national legal systems, almost 500 million people potentially being handed less democracy, less accountability, a more distant legislature and a constitution by stealth via treaties worded "as illegible as possible."
It's about the EU Commission President Jose Barroso quipping he's happy his son's studying law, as under the new treaty "lawyers have a beautiful future.”
It's about a rejected Constitution being reanimated, binding treaties being gradually amended, vetoes given up and things happening by stealth, below the radar, with no scrutiny, debate or input from the public.
It's about people being labelled "psychological terrorists" by members of the ruling class - all for questioning the way things are going.
Again, doesn't the lack of serious debate worry anyone? |
