To some VIPs, it’s dangerous to even question the EU’s perceived wisdom.
There’s Giorgio Napolitano, for example, current President of Italy and former hardline Communist. According to Mr Napolitano, people who paint the EU as a “European superstate” are in fact “psychological terrorists”.
In his speech to students at the University of Siena, Mr Napolitano reminded us that the EU is not a superstate but in fact “a new form of democracy.” Questioning this is, apparently, encouraging “populist demagoguery”.
Got that? Question the received wisdom and you’re down the slippery slope of Adolph and Benito. One wonders whether Horst Köhler, current President of Germany, agrees with such a sentiment (given he was accompanying Mr Napolitano at the time).

On the 60th anniversary of VE Day, Margot Wallstrom said, “Yet there are those today who want to scrap the supranational idea. They want the European Union to go back to the old purely inter-governmental way of doing things. I say those people should come to Terezin and see where that old road leads.”
And who is Margot Wallstrom? Vice-President of the European Commission. Additionally, as Vice-President of the EU’s Commission for Institutional Relations and Communications, she was responsible for pitching the EU Constitution to the people of Europe.
To hammer home the point, Ms Wallstrom was making her speech in Terezin (a wartime Jewish ghetto in the Czech Republic).
Got that one? The “inter-governmental way of doing things” led to World War II, which led to the Holocaust. According to Ms Wallstrom, a move away from the European pooling of sovereignty will lead us back to the barbarism that caused the death of millions.
