| I actually think that quite a few people are buying ladybird larvae so that they can put these on their plants so that they don't have to spray the plants against greenfly. It is a shame that so few people seem to actually recognise the larvae and pupae of ladybirds nowadays. The life cycles of everything used to be a very important part of biology when I was young with a Nature Table. Now everything seems to be treated as something suspect and alien despite the fact that it is easier to look something up and ID it with a mobile phone or computer. I remember a couple of years ago watching a blue butterfly trying to find somewhere to lay its eggs. They like ivy but there is so much less of it around because there seem to be newspaper lists of dangerous plants that aren't dangerous - and when you see people picking up every single fallen leaf to clear off their paved garden as they jetwash it and around their window cills and frames you wonder how anything gets a chance to hibernate over winter. The weather also makes a big difference. |
