I think it is a big unfair to brand 'Old Market Place' a fake place name. The work done by local historian Tracy Logan shows that the car park is indeed an old market place and so calling it this is a nod to Chiswick's civic heritage. It is not unusual for place names to be in common usage in a local area but then sometimes to gradually obtain official status. For instance, I've just contributed to a thread about Saudi propanda TV stations in Chiswick Business Park. There is of course no such place as Chiswick Business Park but everyone in the area knows it as that to avoid confusion with Chiswick House Gardens. The bad news for those who have set their faces against the name 'Old Market Place' is that it is now recognised as a search on City Mapper and Google Maps. The process of it becoming an official place name seems to have got momentum. |
