I thought that only Tory MPs could come up with such out-of-touch comments but I was wrong, our own Steve Taylor is here! ...Unless 'Steve Taylor' is the nom-de-plume of Lee Anderson MP. Have you ever heard the concept of "working poor", Steve? Because that's what we are talking about. It's not (all) about layabouts, or people having children when they shouldn't, it's about working poor. And the shocking level of services for those who - literally - hold this damned country up, day in day out. I have a friend who's a nurse. She is originally from Romania, and she lived in Isleworth with her child, aged 3. She came to this country to work as a nurse and, in her naivety, thought that the salary of £36,000 pa was a good one. It's some £2,350 after tax, not bad heh? Detract rent. For a one-bed flat, they were paying £1,100. So she's got £1,250 left. She then had bills and council tax to pay, which were in the region of £300. £950 left. She then had childcare, which even with subsidies and so on costed her around £400 a month due to the unsociable hours she was working. £550 left. £90 for a bus pass to go to work. £460 left, or £105 and change per week. To do groceries, buy clothes, perhaps maybe send some money home. Then her landlady, in her wisdom, jacked up the rent to £1,250 a month. Now they have £71 a week to eat, get clothed and so on. Eventually she had enough and returned home, the NHS be damned. Believe me, she didn't need the Council to know how to save money, she didn't need the Council to teach her how to do a vegetable stew, she didn't need to attend a 'feed-or-breed' campaign, whatever that is and she surely didn't need Steve Taylor's wisdom on how to raise her child or which tinned vegetable is cheapest. If you don't believe me, Steve, I recommend you set up a little stall next to any food bank to provide free suggestions to the patrons of said establishment. I'm sure they'll all be grateful for your wisdom, I'm sure it never occurred to any of them that a vegetable stew is cheaper than a steak dinner on the high street. |
