| Partly lies and partly not many understanding just how complex and painful it would be to extract a large, inter-dependent country from a very close trading bloc. The main liars was any politician that claimed leaving the EU would be simple and quick. It simply is not possible to extract a country after decades of ever closer cooperation and inter-dependence in a time crazily shorter than the decades it has taken to build the current relations, trades, flows, standards, policies, etc. And even if the UK is stupid enough to push ahead with leaving - with an agreement (and still needing years to formulate the future relations) - then the impact will be considerable and negative. Now this is not about your view of democracy (shaky as that clearly is). This is about the modern trading and globalised world. Voting 'leave' will not change the world. That goes on. It risks going on without and around the UK if we leave ... and that will reduce our wealth and our standing in the world. Some of those who vote Brexit seemed to think they were voting for a super new UK, all shiny and so British and not beholden to Brussels. That was ignorant or at best naive. Its not possible to turn away from a major and favourable trading bloc and not feel massive negative impact. Even an agreed exit will create a massive negative impact, primarily in our services sector (including but not limited to financial services). So the vote, as I can see you are gradually getting to understand, was not remain or leave. It was remain or make your country poorer (and maybe accept a few less eastern Europeans). It really is that simple. |
