What is more disturbing than the lies and distortions is the almost religious zealotry from the leavers and the ongoing demonization of foreigners.

At a time when we need friends and to build bridges abroad, May is choosing to ban foreign students, people who come and pay large amounts of money to study here, learn our culture and values, and then go home in many cases with life long friends and a positive view of the UK. I did a post-graduate course a few years ago where half the course were international, they loved travelling to the UK and meeting people here.

It seems a lot of the hostility to students is because the UK statistics are so poor we have no idea how many overstay. The airport surveys suggested a large number, but it turned out that they are not sophisticated and the true number may be less than 1%. Quite why we choose to include short term students in migration statistics is frankly beyond me.

I have never in my life time feared for the future direction of this country as I do know. We are being led by fools and zealots, the right wing press screams its idiocy and xenophobia ever more loudly, and things can only go badly for the economy. At that point, foreigners will be subject to even greater hostility.
