Let me try: let's say we ask the following question to the UK of the 70s (the one that wasn't exactly on a great path). "Do you want to access the EU single market enabling the UK to become the EU capital for financial markets?" There is a fair chance the "Yes" & "No" camp would have been led by substantial politicians trying to explain their audience (still with an attention span in excess of 2 seconds) the pros (higher growth and prosperity, hence, among other things, more immigration) and the cons (higher inequality, globalization - assuming that's a con, which is not in my book). I will refrain from guessing about the result: given Thursday events I am more sceptical about the capacity of British people to understand basic arithmetic and to come up with sensible outcomes. |
