There is also water source heat pump technology. It works by passing river water, at about 8-10 degreesC, through a grid of pipes full of antifreeze solution. The heat "extracted" from the water brings the solution to its boiling point and the resulting gas is compressed, causing it's temperature to rise dramatically. The gas than passes through another heat exchanger to warm up water that can be used in radiators or baths. It is estimated that a home using the technology can cut its energy bills by 50%. In March 2015 Energy and Climate Change Secretary Ed Davey, said that if the system was used in the Thames it could supply 65,000 London homes and businesses with clean energy. "We need to make the most of the vast amount of clean renewable energy that lies dormant and unused in our rivers, lakes and seas." Or has Amber Rudd torn that up now? |
