I'm all for renewables, but to be clear the electricity generated is not 'stored' in any form. We generate electricity to meet demand. Being able to store a 'surplus' is as I understand a long term target but v hard to achieve with current battery technology, whether large or small scale We face growing risks of black outs in the UK as gap between peak demand (typically cold winter nights) and peak supply (dependant on all generating capacity, traditional plus renewable) is shrinking, largely as old coal and gas power stations are being decommissioned. Links to continetnal European grids can help. But often demand is highest (still and ver cold winter days) when supply from renewable (wind, solar and even wave) can be at its lowest, if not in some cases zero. |
