£100bn would provide a good few houses, not to mention provision for education, health, job creation and infrastructure. There would be no need for any of these unfortunate people to be lodging with the good folk of London W4. Collecting a bit of tax from those who can most afford to pay it would boost the coffers still further. Unfortunately one thing that has been heavily invested in is the notion that says migrants, as opposed to the banks and the rich, are the cause of so many of our economic and social problems. The government now finds itself in a situation of its own making, afraid to do what it knows it should for fear of a political backlash which, judging from the opportunism on display at the most recent general election, could come from just about any quarter. |
