James - In Q1 2015, Pakistan was the greatest source of first time asylum seekers in the UK. Followed by Eritrea. Then Syria. Compared to parts of mainland Europe, however, the UK does not have a refugee crisis - thanks to internationalist measures such as Le Touquet Treaty, the Evian arrangements and €4 million being spent on a reception centre in Calais. With regard to the “migrant crisis” facing the UK, however, perhaps the media and politicians should be focusing on Heathrow (and Gatwick, Luton, etc.), rather than Calais. As long as the 1951 Refugee Convention and the 1967 Protocol exist in their current form, they will act as magnets for irregular migration. |
