“Perhaps we should also be asking why they are willing to risk their lives to flee from Turkey ?” Richard – Perhaps one reason may be that refugees are kept in refugee camps in Turkey (and Jordan and Lebanon, etc)? The expectation is for them to go home at some point in the future, not take eventual nationality and enjoy the full benefits of citizenship. On the whole, European states do not have the same expectation that people will eventually go home. There is a greater emphasis on long term citizenship, equality and, dare I say it, human dignity. Once granted citizenship, once in possession of that passport, refugees and immigrants can stay in the EU forever and enjoy its benefits. Then their relatives can join them. Overall, in Europe, such people do not have to face an entire lifetime being neither one thing nor the other. |
