You are absolutely right Colin. As I said earlier, I ended up working three jobs.My normal 40 hour a week day job, I also had an evening job and I had a weekend job where I worked 7am-7pm on both saturday and sunday.I once worked for 19 weeks straight through without a day off.And after paying the mortgage and bills we had around £5 a week to feed myself, my wife and our dog.And I would have £3 "pocket money"for anything I needed while at work. When we took out our mortgage, the repayments were £90 per month. With interest rates at their highest, this increased to £252 per month. How many people with a mortgage these days could afford to pay such a huge increase. As you say Colin, it was a real struggle to keep a roof over your head in those days.Working almost 100 hours a week and only having enough money to live on pasties and jacket potatoes every day of the week. And you think we were the "generation that got rich on inflation"I think you've got a bloody cheek. |
