The other two reality checks around high property values are firstly given the greater longevity expected in the population, the growing expectation must be that many more of us will use their house's value if you need to fund elderly care in some way. This area was a closed book to me till I had a recently ailing mother and saw first hand how the system now works. Secondly to Sam's and Will's point higher taxes in some form given the dire state of our national finances is inevitable in my mind as well. The issue is equity (hence my earlier comments on the non-domiciled community) and that bigger strategies are needed than any party is currently promoting. The Lib Dem proposals on better use of council tax valuation bands plus more taxes being raised that way feels like a step in the right direction. I also suspect the so called pension freedom Osborne has trumpeted so loud and just launched pre-election will be a nice tax revenue raiser simply because people have poor understanding of what it all means and ignoring the longer term planning needed. |
