I think the mansion tax is ill-conceived and I would prefer a system that collected a tax - say 5% of purchase price of property to anyone who was buying property in UK who did not hold a UK passport. When buying property there are lots of documents to produce and there is also (supposedly) a system in place in check for money laundering (though how this happens for overseas consortiums - heavens knows) why not have to produce a passport as well? I think there should be some changes to the buy to let market as well but it is too early in the morning to think about this. As to the bedroom subsidy - why should someone live in a property too big for their needs if they can't afford to do so and expect their rent to be paid for them via housing benefit. Afterall, there are many people who decide to down-size their property and move to a smaller place once their families have flown the nest. However, I don't see why pensioners are exempt from this subsidy - if you live in a property that is too big for your needs either pay for it yourself or move to a smaller place. |
