I agree Colin - the term "Mansion" implies palatial and expansive property whereas many London locations would struggle to justify that. Indeed in certain parts of London, flats and apartments which will be liable can hardly meet that definition. I just wanted to observe that it is also a wealth tax by another name and as we have seen with pensions open to great tinkering by politicians when they need to raise taxes. On a wider scale I increasingly feel the whole UK real estate system is in need of a strategic and legal shake up but none of the parties has shown the courage to consider. For me, we definitely need a much better and controlled rental sector (certain European countries such as Germany seem to have avoided many of our worst traits and excesses in this area) versus the home ownership mantra and debt mountain that we have pursued for so long. Recent announcements on housing associations and right to buy, seem to wish to maintain this legacy. |
