The reason US regulations specify a flight attendant in the cockpit is to facilitate the re-entry of the absent pilot in the event of the handling pilot being incapacitated, or simply too preoccupied with flying the aircraft to perform the door drills. There is no suggestion that the F/A's duties involve monitoring the pilot's actions or overcoming a suicidal/psychopathic one, so it's by no means certain that his/her presence would have altered the outcome on this occasion. |
