| Well yes, but the ill disguised gloating on display here is somewhat unbecoming. The Norwegian model with a similar sized population has served them pretty well and insulated them from all kinds of economic hardships over the last 35 years, in fact if you ignore the appalling booze price and the kind of insularity that makes UKIPers look like Jean-Claude Juncker by comparison it's pretty much a perfect place to live. Yes the price of oil has crashed, and was crashing during the referendum, but it's worth bearing in mind (and I work in an industry inextricably linked with oil) that precisely none of the high powered traders or analysts called this. None at all. And it's not just Scotland, even the much vaunted Norway with the 3rd largest sovereign wealth fund in the world is going to feel the chills over this one, Russia only balances it's books with oil at US$ 100 per barrel, Iran at an eye watering US$ 143. So retroactive gloating about a decision already taken seems to be rather petty to put it mildly. "Commodity markets are volatile, shocker", you might say. |
