One under appreciated fact is the enormous value of final salary linked pension schemes, still given to all public sector employees but disappearing rapidly in the private sector. Many private sector companies now highlight an employee's total pay, including the company's pension contribution. If we did that in the public sector and then compared the two, it would show that the differential is much, much bigger. Note that most public sector pension funds continue to run large deficits, which are underwritten by HRMC, also know as you and me.

This is not a political point. As people now in their 30s and 40s and even early 50s start to retire, this pension gap will I suspect become a huge and divisive issue. Most private sector pensions will be worth a pittance.
