I'm not sure what the figures are but defined benefit pensions in whatever sector have hit a perfect storm over the last few years, which is why so many employers are abandoning them.
Most private sector employers with these schemes suddenly found themselves with huge deficits because of a combination of increased life expectancy, poor bond yields, flatlining stock exchange, changes in actuarial assumptions and tax changes. We didn't express it in % of salary but my (private sector) employer, having pootled along for years at 5-10% contributions to go with my 5%, suddenly found that a comfortable surplus had become a multi-million pound deficit. They have been paying it down for several years at a rate which I suspect is a very high % of salary.
Meanwhile the number of Hounslow employees on over £100K has come down nearly 50% since 2010, from 14 to 8, but why spoil a good story with facts.
