I spent a few days working in our Munich office last week. My hotel was a ten minute walk from the office and so I walked each morning. Just round the corner from my hotel is the Brauhuasstrasse, with dozens of  busy bars and restaurants all open till almost midnight every evening. Every morning as I walked to the office, the street cleaners were out, along with kerbside sweepers and brushing vans. By 7am, there wasn't a scrap of litter or a bin bag to be seen anywhere between Marienplatz and Lehel, my walking route. A stark contrast to Chiswick, and an embarrassment. Street cleaning is very easy to do. The problem, as with so many other things, is that our local services such as street cleaning are now in the hands of private, for-profit contractors. Their aim is not to keep our streets clean. Their aim is to maximise profits and dividends and so they cut costs as much as possible. That means they don't have enough money to pay for street cleaners, as we can all see every day.
