Yes, I have catproofed my garden and it has worked very well, it is a good compromise, but not just because they are pedigrees but because I love them and I don't want them to get run over, injured,  lost, disappear forever, mutilated by yobs, or catch diseases such as fiv and felv from other cats, or poisoned either deliberately or accidentally.  I will probably never be able to have a rescue cat as most rescue homes insist they have free access to the outdoors, which I think is wrong.   It is indeed a contentious issue, hugely debated in cat literature and on cat forums worldwide.  It depends how you feel about it, I couldn't sleep if I let mine wander and then there would be no point having cats!  I would just say though, as someone else did on here, if you can get them in at night it is much better to keep them in overnight - young and old cats in particular are at risk from foxes and getting run over, amongst all the other hazards, at night.
