| What tosh, Caroline. Some cats (not a majority) prefer to be solitary but look at feral cat populations and you will see communities of cats choosing to live in the same territory, even when they have a choice to move on. Kittens from the same litter are less likely to choose to become solitary. Two cats = company for each other if you are out and about, fewer hurt feelings if one cat bonds to an individual in the household, and some cats prefer the security of staying with a litter mate. A good foster carer or person who has raised a litter should be able to tell which kittens will prefer to be part of a duo and to some extent which kittens are closer to which litter mates. However, I've learnt that the personality I observe in a kitten will still change over time so can't be relied on. I have one in my current litter I think would probably prefer to be a solitary cat in a household if he's given a chance but I don't believe he will have any psychological or stress issues later in life if he goes with one of his siblings. A cat who who has a more territorial personality won't like it if his litter mate leaves/dies and then you try to introduce a stranger cat, so that's something to bear in mind. Be prepared for the higher costs of two cats, get insurance for each to mitigate and enjoy them being part of your household and look forward to lots of laughs and cuddles. As for the discussion on litter trays, I've never had to go above 2 litter trays for multiple fosters, though admittedly I've not had more than 3 grown cats at a time (have had up to 5 kittens + mum). |
