I was almost knocked down on a zebra crossing in Hammersmith when a bus stopped for me but a cyclist didn't bother. He flew past and was so close that he hit a lampshade I was carrying in a John Lewis bag. The lampshade and I luckily survived the close encounter. Then a few mornings ago when I was opening the blinds in our living room, I saw two cyclists go by in the space of five seconds. The first was riding the wrong way up our one-way street and the second was riding along while texting on his mobile - using both hands to do so. Finally, just yesterday I saw a father collect his toddler from the kindergarten at the bottom of our road, strap him into the seat at the back of his bike and then ride off, again going the wrong way in our one-way street. Forgive me if I treat these knights of the road with just a little contempt. |
