The trouble is that it is so much more difficult and expensive to get rid of stuff you don't want nowadays. We buy more because we can buy on credit. If we thought more before we bought we just might not buy - which is why retailers are really really happy to make a quick sale! Do you remember when we had to save up for things? Many a time I remember the attraction of something having worn off before enough money had been saved, earned and borrowed. It is much more satisfying when you can look at the items that you have collected together and feel happy that you still like them! Charities who are so often run by volunteers now need to constantly find good outlets for the growing amount of stuff that people bring them when they can't sell it on ebay or gumtree themselves. From the sort of stuff that I have needed to dispose of they also need volunteers who can sew buttons on, hems up, split seams together etc. Nowadays people seem to need to go to Skills Workshops to learn these things - or to a Re-Skilling Workshop eg at Ealing or Kingston Transition. The West London Waste Authority will come and see you if have a group who would benefit and a space where people can meet. Take a look at their website: http://westlondonwaste.gov.uk/ (Andy I hope you've found some solutions. I'm still sewing elastic into waist bands so that some of the clothes are saleable! Now why wasn't I asked to help years ago? A little at a time would have been a doddle.) |
