Thanks for earlier replies - I've now got a smaller 2.5 L one - so far so good. I've been reading an american vegan slow cooker book and the writer says that slow cookers are about twice as fast as they used to be - somthing to do with food scares or something. She claims to have dozens of the things so should know ... Anyway, she says beans (except kidney beans) can be soaked overnight and then put straight into the slow cooker - I'm giving this a try today (low setting) - its been on low for 4 hours and seems to be cooking like a rocket - Which magazine does say they vary greatly in the speed they cook at ... sounds about right.
