There is an EU precedent for the break-up of a country, in the division of former Czechoslovakia, and I'm surprised no-one seems to have considered it. I read somewhere that hundreds of pieces of legislation had to be passed to ensure the smooth transition to Slovakia and the Czech Republic. I would be most interested to know more about how it all took place - for example, was there a referendum? That split happened in a relatively new political entity; perhaps a rending apart of a 300-year-old entity would be far more dificult. |
