I was always told that the importance of Faslane was that it allowed the Armageddon-Subs rapid access to the deep Atlantic Waters that they patrolled and relative "invisibility". But perhaps the technology has moved on? ********************* Although it is right that the Scots should make their own decision on this matter I think it would have been extremely interesting for the English, Welsh, Ulstermen and Cornish to have had their own non-binding referendum(s) on whether or not they wished to remain in a political and economic union with Scotland. After all in 1707 representative democracy was in its infancy and no one actually bothered to ask the vast majority of residents of the rest of the archipelago what they thought of merging their successful nations with the bankrupt Scottish entity. The Irish actually had their own all Ireland Parliament at the time but I do not think that anyone bothered to ask them if it was OK for the Scots to join the Union. Sadly whether the vote is YES or NO I fear that this is not the last we will be hearing from Mr Salmond. |
