| Unfortunately I think it is often a cost cutting exercise without much of a thought about what is being lost ie by cutting down so there is no ongoing work or costs. I'd happily contribute to pruning rather than complete disposal. II noticed from a recent Springwatch that Ealing has a good number of stag beetles. The Parks Dept leave a lot of logs for people to sit on/children to walk along and stag beetle larvae live in dead wood. Their larvae which look like huge white 'c' shaped grubs with orange faces and feet and I understand they can live in dead wood for up to 7 years. Not sure about how long they are in their pupal stage but the adult lives for a very short time and relies on what it ate when a larva. No wonder they are quite a rare beetle to find! I saw the grub for the first time knowingly recently! Nearly all our windows are double glazed with ventilators as we changed them years ago. They don't get so hot or cold or rattle when the planes go overhead as they used to do! |
