My brother mended some sash cords - he didn't seem to find it particularly difficult.  The old wooden windows were draughty and used to rattle and move around a lot and the new ones have seals and a trickle vent and are much better.  There is now a thinner type of double glazing available than was not available or easily available then.

I'm still not convinced that the windows that tip open work as well in creating the air movement that sash windows do to cool rooms.
