There’s government guidance for the suitability of mini roundabouts, and while they might have applied to the Fishers Lane junction before the ‘closure’, they no longer do, as ‘difficulties can result from their use at lightly trafficked side roads, where emerging vehicles or turning movements are unexpected..’ At Fishers Lane there should now be no traffic using the side road except for occasional buses and cycles, while the guidance points out that buses can find them difficult to negotiate, and ‘..cyclists are vulnerable at all types of road junction although roundabouts pose particular problems (being) particularly vulnerable if circulating and entering vehicles fail to yield’. A mini roundabout also relies on those using it giving clear signals when turning so other road users can accommodate them at comparatively short notice.
