| Notionally C49 runs down Rusthall and then briefly mounts the pavement at the corner with South Parade, crosses the dual use zebra and then onto the common. I've never actually seen anyone perform this manoeuvre either crossing from Rusthall this way or turning into the underpass directly from the path on the Common. I would speculate that the reason it was designed this way is that it allowed Ealing Council to fund the upgrade of the zebra with money that was put aside for cycle infrastructure. It really makes no sense otherwise. It is correct to say that it is ambiguous at best whether a cycleway can be put across a common and that is why there is no signage in this area. As far as I am aware, an appeal is due to take place on the longrunning case of a cyclist being knocked off his bike by a dog near here and that may have implications going forward. What would have been far more useful for C49 would have been if it was kept on South Parade at this section which is the way nearly every cyclist would go. This would have enabled clearer marking at the roundabout which would serve as reminder to westbound traffic that cyclists turning right have right of way. |
