If you don't wear a helmet, or have lights on, you have a death wish. And since a car-bike crash often involves a hospital or a funeral's director, few learn and apply this lesson once they earn it. Here in Chiswick things are still tame, I'd say, but over in East London I see people riding on fixies, with only a back brake or no brakes at all, no lights and no helmet which utterly terrifies me. Still, my biggest bike scare of them all - being hit by a Range Rover on a roundabout near LHR - happened despite me being already in the roundabout, wearing enough yellow reflective stuff to look like a road-working Teletubby, two lights back and one front. And it happening before sunset. The driver saw me in the roundabout and just decided to go for it nonetheless. |
