Here is the (unanswered) letter I sent to Hanif Khan at Hounslow Council:

"Dear Mr. Khan,

Recently you issued a press release concerning new traffic restrictions in Chiswick as follows:

“Chiswick School will benefit from an enhanced scheme, with a new trial starting on Staveley Road, which is adjacent to the school. The trial will see all traffic restricted, except for local buses and permit holders, between 8 am and 5 pm, in response to feedback from residents regarding an increase in traffic on Burlington Lane.

Residents and businesses in the Grove Park and Fauconberg Controlled Parking Zone areas, and Staveley Road allotment holders will be eligible for permits.Permit holders will be able to access Staveley Road at all times and Burlington Lane will allow exit-only traffic onto the Great Chertsey Road (A316).

The new trial will test whether the modifications can better balance the need to provide access to residents and businesses while reducing through traffic from the roads that border Chiswick School and other streets in the area.”

In introducing these changes with no consultation in this area, you are most unfairly penalising residents of the Chiswick Wharf, Regency Quay, Corney Reach, Grantham and Corney roads, and the Alexandra Gardens estate for no good reason. I urge you think again.

Under your new rules, all traffic out of the above streets will be forced to turn right at the Edensor Road traffic lights and drive up to the already heavily congested Hogarth roundabout simply to access the rest of Chiswick.

The only way to access the Great West Road going west will be via the Hogarth roundabout further adding to the jams that are already a daily feature there.

It will become impossible to access the Grove Park Surgery, Chiswick Station or Busby’s (pharmacy) by car – a major difficulty for the elderly.

The bus route E3 will be unable to turn left up the A316 as cars forced to turn right block the turn.

You give no factual or statistical justification for the claim that there has been “an increase in traffic on Burlington Lane.” If that is indeed the case, it is entirely due to the consequences of blocking Staveley Road half way along - which you ordered earlier this year.

Moreover, the restrictions on the use of Staveley Road adjoining Chiswick School twice a day (when the pupils arrive and depart) worked well, and were understood by local residents.

Your new regulations are discriminatory and unreasonable. A large area of houses and flats near the river Thames is now, effectively, to be cut off from the rest of Chiswick.

I urge you to think again."
