| Michael's post is not true just in case anyone was wondering. Exact numbers change sightly for different studies around the world but in general if someone is hit by a car at 40 mph they are 90% likely to be killed. At 30 its around 50% and at 20 its more like 10-15% If the speed limit it 30mph then you will usually find the 85th percentile to be about 31/32mph if its a free flowing road. If its 20mph you will find its somewhere around 23mph. The message here is on average people will speed regardless but they will not speed way over the limit. Idiots will but not the majority of drivers. I would rather be hit at 23mph than 32mph every day of the week. Also slower speeds give more time to react. There is a ridiculous amount of research done on this subject to show that 20mph is a hell of lot safer and that the impact on journey times is tiny. Pick your battles. |
