| Ken you are continuing to talk about cycling and dog ladies, NOT about a Cherry tree being planted in the middle of what was a glorious aisle of Chestnut Trees. When in full flower, the Chestnuts formed a towering aisle of beauty that originally extended from the A316 along Hartington Road and beyond Cavendish Road junction. Over the years this aisle of trees has steadily been decimated and lost trees not replaced at all or as now, by the odd ill planned cherry tree. I know the Chestnut Leaf Miner disease has affected some of these trees. However, from the Forestry commission:- "Although it (leaf miner) can cause severe damage to horse chestnut leaves on an annual basis, and discolouration and defoliation before normal autumn leaf-fall, on its own the pest does not significantly impair trees' health, and they will usually flush normally the following spring." Also, this is the most important bit I feel "Damage can be reduced by removing fallen leaves during the autumn and winter and either composting them thoroughly, to destroy the over-wintering pupae, or if the leaves are collected into smaller heaps, by covering them with a layer of soil or other plant material to prevent adult emergence the following spring." |
