See Also 1. 1216 when French invaded and Price Louis was crowned King of England (only Windsor and Dover Castles held out). Earlier is his reign King John had sunk a French invasion fleet whilst it was still in harbour (and the crews were a shore getting drunk). 2. 1485 Henry Tudor successfully invaded supported by a large French army of mercenaries and a few Welshmen (including Oliver Cromwell's ancestor) 3. 1544 - French invade the IOW (briefly) and Henry VIIth watches his flag ship the Mary Rose sink in Portsmouth Harbour 4. 1588 - attempted invasion by Spanish Philip who had a "burning" ambition to bring the Counter Reformation to us heretics. 5. 1688 - Dutch Billy successfully invades with huge multi-national army including lots of Dutchmen and French Hugueonots. 6. 1715 and 1745 the last of two unpleasant episodes out of many when Scottish people invaded England to show us how proud they were of being Scottish and different - just in case we had forgotten. I could go on - I know the Spanish and the French had "another go" and even the Americans landed at Whitehaven in the War of Independence. |
