The greatest ever wave of immigrants to these shores was not the Saxons in the fifth century, nor the Vikings in the ninth, nor the Normans in the eleventh. It was Eastern Europeans in the twenty first century. In terms of pure numbers, more Polish and other Eastern Europeans arrived in Britain in the years after EU expansion than any other racial group in the islands' history. The British economy boomed as a result, even if it did mean we had to surrender certain charming British traditions such as waiting three hours for the plumbers to turn up so they could mix up the sewage outlet pipe with the taps on the bidet. In another age such a huge foreign influx would have caused riots and house burning, but we have come a long way since the days of Eric Bloodaxe. And this is what UKIP is doing, taking us back, back to when foreigners were regarded with fear, suspicion and loathing, they are dividing, not leading. Blaming and demonising an element within has a very troubling historical precedent. |
