I too was brought up as a Catholic, and I remember the Latin mass, which I rather liked, and chanting catechism at the age of 7:
'Who made you? God made me.
Why did God make you?
God made me to know him, love him and serve him in this world, and to be happy with him forever in the next.'
I think I committed early heresy because even at that age I thought, in the language of a child, that this seemed a pretty 'big-headed' reason for making us. I asked my mum about it, but she had no answers. I don't share Oliver's bitterness, but I abandoned religion long ago and feel that it has no place in education in state schools or politics. I am 100% in favour of the separation of church and state, and in some places, I think the inability or refusal to accept this separation is at the root of a great deal of cruelty and even sadism. A Reformation is a vital stage in any country's emergence into the modern world.
